List of modeling tools for the neuro and cognitive sciences

This is a collection of freely available modeling tools related to the subjects of Brains, Minds & Media. All listed tools are used in research and education. Free availability includes open source tools and all tools, that are free of charge. Here, only those tools are listed, that raised the editors' attention (hence, this list is not exhaustive).

CataComb 2 - a software system for building and studying models of biological systems on scales ranging from single channels to behaving animals.

GENESIS - (GEneral NEural SImulation System): A tool for building realistic simulations of biological neural systems. This site includes downloads and tutorials and educational resources build with GENESIS.

Neo/NST - Neural networks Simulation Toolkit (NST) and its corresponding Graphical Editor Neo (NST EditOr). This tools provides an open collection of object oriented reuseable units. The site provides downloads, tutorials and examples.

Neural Simulation Language - NSL (pronounced "Nissl"), is a powerful yet easy to use simulation language and development system. The site provides downloads, tutorials and online models.

NEURON - for empirically-based simulations of neurons and networks of neurons. This site includes a large collection of helpful documents on its use in education and research.

Simbrain - a freeware tool for building, running, and analyzing neural-networks (computer simulations of brain circuitry).

Post your tool

If you want us to be aware of your modeling tool, just send a mail to  brains-minds-media.org with the subject: bmm modeling tool posting and in the body text all relevant information about the event you like announce, including the main web link, if available. After receiving your information, we put it on this page as soon as possible.
